Is the Punters V3 Rangefinder Legal in Competition? Slope, Rule 4.3 and Local Rules
- by Punters Golf
Short answer: yes. The Punters V3 can be used in most competitions, as long as slope is switched off and your club or event hasn't banned distance-measuring devices. Here's what the Rules of Golf actually say, how local rules work in Australia, and how to make sure you're set up correctly before your next comp.
What the Rules of Golf say
The Rules of Golf are written jointly by The R&A and the USGA and used by Golf Australia. Rule 4.3a covers what you can and can't use equipment for during a round. Under Rule 4.3a(1), getting information on distance or direction, for example from a distance-measuring device, is allowed.
The same rule lists what's not allowed:
- measuring elevation changes
- interpreting distance or direction information, for example a device recommending a line of play or a club
- using an alignment device to help align the ball.
Slope functions work by measuring elevation change and adjusting the distance. That's why slope must be off in a round played under the Rules. You can read Rule 4 in full at randa.org/en/rog/the-rules-of-golf/rule-4.
The local rule: Model Local Rule G-5
Rule 4.3a(1) points to Committee Procedures Section 8, Model Local Rule G-5. This lets a committee adopt a local rule that prohibits distance-measuring devices altogether.
In other words, rangefinders are allowed by default, but a club or event can ban them. Some elite and professional events do this.
So before a comp, check your club's local rules or the conditions of the competition, or ask the committee.
What about a device that has slope but it's turned off?
The Rules care about how you use a device, not whether it has the feature. Rule 4.3 says it only concerns how equipment is used and doesn't limit the equipment you may have with you.
In practice, having a slope-capable laser is fine as long as slope is off and you don't use it during the round. If you're unsure, Rule 4.3 says to ask the Committee for a ruling.
How the Punters V3 handles this
The Punters V3 has a slope on/off switch, which we describe on the product page as "tournament conforming". With slope off, the V3 gives you straight-line distance only, which is the information Rule 4.3a(1) allows.
Before your comp round
- Switch slope off and check the display shows no slope reading.
- Check the unit is set to metres if your course is marked in metres.
- Check your club's local rules or competition conditions for any ban on distance-measuring devices.
- Tell your playing partners or marker that slope is off if they ask.
What's the penalty if I get it wrong?
Under Rule 4.3, the first breach gets the general penalty, which is two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play. A second breach is disqualification.
Using slope in social rounds and practice
Slope is a genuinely useful tool for social golf, practice rounds and learning how elevation changes your distances. Many golfers use it to learn how much a hill affects a shot, then play comps with slope off and make the adjustment themselves.
Can I share distances with my playing partners?
Yes. Under the Rules of Golf, information about distances is public information and isn't "advice", so you can tell another player the distance to the flag or lend them your rangefinder, as long as slope stays off. Sharing doesn't change the rule about elevation: whoever uses the device is still only getting a straight-line distance.
Making the most of slope in practice
Slope readings are most useful when you use them to train your own judgement for comp days. A simple routine:
- On a practice or social round, take a straight-line reading and then a slope reading on uphill and downhill shots.
- Before you look at the slope number, guess how much the hill will add or take off.
- Note the difference on your scorecard or phone for the holes where elevation catches you out.
- In your next comp, with slope off, use those notes to make the adjustment yourself.
After a few rounds most golfers get a feel for how much the steep holes on their home course play up or down. That's knowledge you're allowed to use in any competition.
The bottom line
Distance-only rangefinders are allowed under the Rules of Golf unless a local rule says otherwise. Slope must be off during competition. With its slope switch, the Punters V3 is set up for both.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Punters V3 legal in competition?
Yes, with slope switched off, unless your club or event has adopted Model Local Rule G-5 banning distance-measuring devices.
Can I use slope in a comp?
No. Rule 4.3a(1) doesn't allow measuring elevation changes during a round.
Can I carry a rangefinder that has slope?
Yes. Rule 4.3 is about how you use equipment, so keep slope off throughout the round.
Where can I read the rule?
The R&A publishes Rule 4 at randa.org/en/rog/the-rules-of-golf/rule-4. The USGA publishes the same Rules at usga.org.
What is the penalty for using slope in a competition?
The general penalty for a first breach (two strokes in stroke play, loss of hole in match play), and disqualification for a second.
